Staff Product Engineer (Full-Stack, TypeScript)

This is a fully remote, direct-hire position with our client. Applicants must be authorized to work in the US without current or future sponsorship.

We're partnering with a fully remote, fast-growing software company to hire a Staff Product Engineer. This is a new, highly visible role where you'll work directly with the CTO, product leadership, and a distributed engineering team to shape architecture, scale the product, and grow the company's internal engineering capabilities. You'll stay hands-on while setting technical standards, mentoring engineers, and raising the bar for the team around you. Responsibilities

Architecture and Technical Direction

• Own the architecture and design of complex, mission-critical systems across the full stack.

• Partner with the CTO to define and execute the long-term engineering strategy.

• Translate business strategy into practical technical roadmaps, and respectfully push back when there's a better approach.

• Guide data modeling and system design with a focus on scalability, security, and long-term maintainability.

Reliability and Automation

• Strengthen reliability through monitoring, service-level objectives, incident response, and blameless postmortems with measurable follow-through.

• Turn manual work (deployments, data fixes, reporting, reviews, documentation) into automated, scalable systems.

• Ensure systems meet security, privacy, audit, and compliance requirements for sensitive data.

Leadership

• Set engineering standards and lead design and code reviews without becoming a bottleneck.

• Mentor engineers to grow their technical judgment, ownership, and problem-solving.

• Take on cross-functional technical challenges that lack a clear owner and drive them to completion.

• Build alignment across U.S. and international engineering teams, and represent engineering with product and executive leadership.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including time as a Staff, Principal, or equivalent technical leader.

• Experience in a startup or growth-stage environment where you owned outcomes, not just assigned work.

• Deep expertise in TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, and PostgreSQL.

• Strong database fundamentals: schema design, transactions, locking, query performance, and data integrity.

• A track record of designing and supporting business-critical systems such as workflows, integrations, financial transactions, or sensitive data.

• Experience making major architecture decisions and clearly explaining the trade-offs.

• Experience scaling a product as customers, markets, and requirements expand.

• Solid grounding in reliability, monitoring, and incident response.

• Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain complex ideas to non-technical audiences.

• A thoughtful approach to AI tools that boosts productivity without sacrificing ownership, oversight, or quality.

• Comfort operating with high autonomy and ownership outside a traditional Agile or Scrum framework.

Nice to Have Skills

• Event-driven, asynchronous, or workflow-heavy systems (Kafka, Temporal, Inngest, or similar)

• Scaling software across multiple markets or jurisdictions

• Regulated or compliance-focused environments

• Helping an organization move from outsourced engineering to a strong in-house team

• Building internal platforms or developer productivity tooling

• Prior experience with Shape Up
